Dog Dog Lost Show Westminster

The prize received was only the red ribbon and the publicity generated by the heavy media-covered show. Westminster is a prestige event that does not award dollar prizes to its winning canines.

It is a big show that brings together 2,500 dogs of over 150 breeds, owners and handlers to Madison Square Garden annually.

The dog that bested Magnum at Westminster was a French Bulldog whose American Kennel Club registered name is Robobull Fabelhaft Im On Fire.

Sisters-in-law Bonnie Berney, of Sapulpa, and Helga Kamp of Bixby own the dog and are thrilled by results from New York.

“It was definitely a ‘bucket list’ moment for us,” Berney said referencing the Jack Nicholson/ Morgan Freeman film about fun and exciting things to be accomplished before dying.

“We’re going to keep him out on the show circuit for another year or so, but someday he’ll be a therapy dog when he comes home,” said Berney.

Magnum was purchased by Berney as a birthday present for Kamp.

Magnum currently lives in Dallas with his show handler David Williams. The dog’s full American Kennel Club registry name is: Champion Chaoyang Chick Magnet At Asia.

The 2-year-old born Dec. 3, 2007, has done well on the show dog circuit. He picked up a $1,200 purse at the Eukanuba show held recently in Long Beach, Calif.

He is no stranger to the publishing world either having made the cover photo of the show dog magazine Showright’s January edition. He has won over 50 ribbons in all competitions and 18 in Group 1 competitions, or finals.

Berney’s first Shar Pei was a special dog to her and her family. Her name was Shen-Te.

“I got her in 1983 from a lady in Tulsa, she was a pet but we bred her and produced three champions.

When Shen-Te passed away at age 13, Berney admits she lost interest in the dog show world.

“We were starting a business then and were busy and I just lost interest in it,” she said.

It’s of interest to note that the Berney’s named their business entity Shen-Te Enterprises, which is still going strong today.

The company builds simulator systems for aircraft and law enforcement training purposes.

Chinese Shar Pei dogs are intelligent and described by Berney as being very easy to train “ like “wash and wear.”

Magnum practices a behavior not unknown to his breed. He will lick his paws and then wipe and clean his face much as a typical cat would. He is friendly an loves children according to his owners.

“Magnum just loves everybody.”
